Associate Research Fellow Scholarship Find in Ageing Physical Activity, Health and Well-being based in Truro, Cornwall

Peninsula Medical School, within the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, is widely regarded as the strongest of the new medical schools in the UK. It has established an excellent reputation for high quality educational programmes and has a high quality and expanding research portfolio. From the outset the School has sought to build an international research reputation, to complement its innovative educational programme, through tight focus on areas of strength and exploitation of its pan-peninsula status.

Based within the European Centre for Environment and Human Health the successful candidate will work with Dr Cassandra Phoenix to examine the significance of physical activity in shaping people's experiences and perceptions of the ageing process. A range of innovative qualitative research methods will be employed to gain an in-depth and applied understanding of healthy ageing, intergenerational relationships, and social well-being across the life course.

The post will support the research relating to how older adults experience sport and physical activity, and how physically active older adults are perceived by others. This information will assist in promoting healthy ageing within the natural environment and improving perceptions of the ageing process.

You should have a knowledge and understanding of relevant local and national policies regarding ageing and physical activity. You will be educated at degree level and will also have experience of qualitative research methods. It will be advantageous to have experience in narrative theory and analyses and project management. A PhD or evidence of PhD level research outputs would be desirable as would a Master's degree in a relevant subject (e.g. sociology, sport and health sciences, anthropology, social gerontology, or related subject).

This is a fixed-term position is available from 1st June 2011 until 31st August 2013 and will be based in Truro. The post will be appointed to the University of Exeter.

The salary for this appointment will be £24,370 - £27,428 per annum.

The point on the scale will be determined by knowledge, skills and experience, and will be clarified following interview.
